Here's Jeff and Erin, reinforcing some of the basics of
PageMaker 6.0. The software is used for desktop publishing, from simple
brochures and business cards to large newspapers and books. It is a very
large program, with a zillion ways to do various tasks. During the first
two mornings, students were taught the basics of the program and assigned
to create a simple 2-page about their school. The document was to contain
examples of all of the elements which had been previously introduced. The
students used the next two days to complete their individual project. Friday
the class planned the design of the book which they wish to publish: a survey
of the region, history of the school, introduction to the school and all
her departments and courses, and of course information about the "design
team." The book will be used for incoming students, as well as for
school public relations.

Here's Jeff, finding the answer in the great tutorial book that they
bought for the school. Jeff and Erin came to Sibiu during a month-long backpack
trek around Europe, and they were glad to get rid of that heavy book! They
spent 10 days in Sibiu, living at Hotel Silva and taking in all the sights
and flavors of the city and region. The Fitzpatrick-Bjorns are terrific
travelers and fantastic teachers!

The program utilizes various pallets and tools. Jeff is pictured here
at the blackboard, introducing the basic tool pallet. Jeff and Erin supplied
chalk for the classroom, in colors, even! Commented Jeff, " The school
is bleak, and Erin says the student rest rooms do not bear mentioning. One
thing we like is that there is a teacher stairwell and a student stairwell.
I think we'll import that idea."

During our time at the school, there was also an engineer's proficiency
contest where engineers came from far and wide to be proven "the
best" in their field. Many are graduates of Energetic, which is essentially
a "tech school." Pictured above are some of the contestants during
their lunch break.
Commented Jeff: "The school is more reminiscent of an old lecture
building on a university campus than an (American) high school. Not much
personality or color, quite dusty, old student desks, mostly bare walls
and sparse furnishings. A lot of the bleakness at the school stems from
the lack of materials: Amalia, our host teacher, has to supply her own paper...she
told a story of having to beg the main office for 5 sheets of printer paper.
She ended up getting them only after she signed for them, assuring the school
she was using them for school purposes! (Jeff and Erin used the donations
they received to buy her a box of printer paper, among other things!)

the privilege to attend Energetic School, which is one of the top schools
in the city. Most of our 2001 students were first or second-year students,
so (hopefully) they will continue to use the program. The kids refer to
their school as the "jail" or (more poetically) "the cemetery
of their youth." Hilarious. Of course they must not hate it TOO much
since they chose to come back at 8:30 on the first Monday of their summer
vacation for the PageMaker course!
