Redecorating, American-Style, at HOTEL SILVA

Total strangers from two different continents sat together at a birthday dinner for a mutual friend. One was the manager-owner of Hotel Silva in Sibiu. The other was an interior designer / office-building manager from America who spends 3 months every year doing humanitarian aid in Romania with her husband. "I'm retired, and I was not looking for a job," comments Jean Conklin, "but the Hotel renovation project challenged me. I saw it as a way to share my years of training and experience with a country trying to recover from a 45-year time-warp. For a half-century, Communism had totally isolated Romania from the rapid development of other more westernized countries. Jean's sensitivity to design drew her to lend her expertise to Hotel Silva's massive remodeling / redecorating project. In an intensive 3-week project in Sibiu, Jean offered consulting expertise in decor, design, and management-marketing, as well as a "makeover" with silk floral arrangements and some other interior decorating touches. The "occidental" blend of European and American design and decor make Hotel Silva Sibiu's nicest and most inviting hotel. Through a generous donation, Hotel Silva is now a proud sponsor of some of the ongoing projects that assist the less-fortunate in Sibiu. (see the Heart for Romania website for more information on their projects in Sibiu, Romania.) Featured below are some "working" shots of the floral transformation.

With thousands of blossoms purchased at a huge discount through Doreen at Interdecor, in Spokane, WA, Jean had her work cut out for her! Interdecor is one of Heart for Romania's longtime "flower-supporters", providing in-kind donations and below-cost floral supplies for the foundation's investment in beautifying Romania through simple expressions of friendship.

Jean (above) is anchoring styrofoam in a new container for a lobby arrangement. Supplies are extremely limited, so Jean spent much time modifying items. Old and new vases were painted and then sprayed with accent paints to give them a new, creative touch.

Jean and her Romanian friend, Maria, creating their art. The arrangements were custom-designed for every room, coordinating the creations with the room's carpet, blankets and pictures. Every room received one small potted arrangement, and one large wall arrangement, and both had matching bows. All the ribbon used was a generous donation from Cottage Flowers, in Hermiston, Oregon. Many other large arrangements were created for hallways and public areas.

The Romanian broom (pictured above) was Jean's choice for the platform for the wall arrangements. But the ethnic stereotype against putting street brooms on a hotel wall was an insurmountable option, so a flatter platform (below right) was chosen when more-desirable baskets (below left) would not be available for 5 months.
