Our
Glasses Program is expanding! We have given away hundreds of prescription
and non-prescription glasses, mostly in rest homes. Recently, we received
thousands of pairs of unisex frames. Our pilot program to provide 200 pairs
of prescription glasses to Sibiu's needy people was launched in April,2001.
The following announcement (below) was given newspaper
and radio exposure in Sibiu in April, 2001. Understandably, masses of people
were lined up 2 hours early on distribution day, with prescription in hand!
The recipients paid for their own eye exam, and Heart furnished free frames
and paid for the cost of lens-grinding and fitting the frames. Heart also
paid a small administration fee to Third Age Foundation for their facilitation
of this new glasses program. It was a HUGE success, thanks to cooperative
efforts. We will be doing more periodic distributions of this kind.
We also received 5000 pairs of non-prescription reading
glasses in various corrections. These are easy for us to distribute ourselves.
