Hundreds of Orphanages - Thousands of Orphans!

Romania's orphanages grew out of a dictator's desire to build the largest work force in the world. Contraception was illegal, and families were encouraged to lighten their burden of excessively large families by letting the state-run orphanages raise their children. Even though the revolution overthrew this governmental insanity, today's Romanian orphanages continue to overflow. Many of the children are true orphans. But many of the children in Romania's orphanages are 'orphans of convenience' rather than necessity - they have families living in nearby communities.
