Located in the middle of Romania is the city of Sibiu, (approx. population = 250,000). Sibiu is in the center of Transylvania, one of the 3 historical regions in Romania. German inhabitants founded the city in the 11th century. Over time, the town grew and extra defense walls were built. Most of the of medieval city fortress still stands, including 3 walls and 3 gates, and they are integral parts of the town. Romania is situated in central-eastern Europe and has as neighbors Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, Moldavia, and Ukraine. Its geographical borders include the Danube River and the Black Sea. About 35.000 inhabitants live in the historic part of the city of Sibiu. The homogeneity of the cityscape and its historic character are internationally singular. The fact that no substantial negative modifications took place in the last ten years is the result of the low investment strength in Sibiu. The old part of town is endangered by the recently increasing number of non-expert restorations, the dilapidation of the buildings, the bad housing conditions and the high density of the population. Since 1999, an urban redevelopment project has been operating in Sibiu. The main goal of this project is to establish a local potential for urban development. Development is pursuing both cultural and economic goals, for the preservation of the old city as a cultural heritage creates jobs both in the local building industry, the handicraft sector and tourism. | |||||||||||||||
